1 18 20 1 From the Technology Deployment Director As the director of Technology Deployment at INL, I am proud to serve an organization with such dedication to our mission, outcome and strong spirit of innovation. Ensuring the nation’s energy security requires not only research, development and demonstration, but actual deployment and industry use of INL’s capabilities and innovations. The goal of our technology transfer efforts is to build an inspiring legacy of impact by ensuring INL capabilities and technologies are put to use to grow our economy, improve the quality of our lives and keep us safe from national threats. Deploying INL’s technologies and capabilities requires a team effort, which starts with our esteemed innovators and results in shared success among many individuals and organizations. The accomplishments cataloged in this report reflect a culmination of notable efforts and demonstrate the value of the hard work and combined talents of numerous INL employees. INL has shown remarkable performance improvement in technology transfer in Fiscal Year 2018, having achieved 350 percent improvement in both innovation production and licensing since 2014 lows. With over 300 active licenses and with more than 60 new licenses signed in FY 18, INL continues to maintain its upward trend in innovation in all key performance indicators: software disclosures, innovation disclosures and total number of license agreements. INL continued to execute Strategic Partnership Projects, User Facility, and Cooperative Research and Development Agreements to address the challenges industry faces. Further, INL publishes nearly 600 journal articles, conference papers, software programs, presentations, books and other materials annually. INL holds National Technology Transfer Working Group leadership positions and leads Department of Energy labs in participation in Energy I-Corps. INL researchers have received Technology Commercialization Fund Awards, Small Business Innovation Awards and other funding opportunities. More impactful deployment highlights are captured in this report. In 2018, our organization has aggressively pursued innovation awards, winning two Federal Laboratory Consortium regional awards, leading DOE labs in R&D 100 finalist honors with 11 recognized technologies, and having two researchers honored as finalists at the Idaho Innovation Awards. We have also recognized top innovators in a newly established Hall of Fame, and have prepared a series of helpful tools for researchers, including a patent primer and an inventor’s guide, to continue this high-impact innovation. We’re grateful for the encouragement received from private and government sponsors, DOE, licensees, users and partners over this past year. It is an exciting time to be part of INL, and I believe we are setting the stage for new invention opportunities and discoveries that will factor into INL’s growth and America’s prosperity for years to come.
