22 PRACTICUMS Practicums are an unpaid opportunity for students to apply what they are learning in the classroom in a working environment under the guidance of a professional. From INL’s side of the equation, managers have the opportunity to evaluate students and their potential for employment after they have completed their training. Radcon technician students from the College of Eastern Idaho (formerly Eastern Idaho Technical College) “job shadow”professionals at INL’s Materials & Fuels Complex and Advanced Test Reactor Complex. In the Occupational Medicine Program, University of Utah candidates studying to be physicians are given the opportunity to work alongside INL physicians, getting hands-on training in a safe environment. MY AMAZING FUTURE 2017 marked the 10th anniversary of the My Amazing Future program, an initiative that allows eighth- grade girls from southeast Idaho to learn about STEM fields and the professionals serving in them. Over 150 eighth-grade young women gathered at INL to learn about potential careers in science, technology, engineering or math by participating in over 16 hands-on workshops and demonstrations. Students were able to interact with real researchers, engineers and scientists and take part in hands-on activities to peak their interest in STEM fields. The full-day event was designed to illustrate how a STEM education translates into exciting career options.
