4 NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED PROGRAMS From summer internships to research fellowships, Idaho National Laboratory’s University Partnerships Division plays an integral role in growing the lab’s resources and widening its impact around the academic world. In 2017, INL University Partnerships hosted 695 people from 139 institutions across the United States and abroad. Employee education accounted for 241 people from 37 institutions.The remaining 454 included: Interns 344 people from 94 institutions, including nine students from seven international institutions Joint Appointments 23 people from 15 institutions Postdoctoral Researchers 42 people from 31 institutions, five of them from five institutions outside of the U.S. International Researchers 13 people from three institutions outside the U.S. Academic Visitors five people from three institutions Faculty Researchers two people from two institutions TeamingTeachers seven people from two institutions Practicums seven people from one institution Graduate Fellowships 11 people from six institutions The collaborative relationships INL has developed with institutions in North America, Europe and Asia have played an increasingly important role in meeting the lab’s critical staffing needs. With INL’s recruitment of interns and postdoctoral researchers, the University Partnerships Division was responsible for close to 45 percent of new hires. With over 40 percent of its employees nearing retirement age, INL recognizes that to grow and thrive it must offer members of the next generation hands-on lab experience, as well as mentoring from experienced professionals.
