5 Research appointments remain an essential step in developing the talent pipeline of INL and the laboratory maintained approximately the same number of postdoctoral researchers as last year.This year saw the introduction of the Deslonde de Boisblanc Distinguished Postdoctoral Appointment, which is competitively awarded to early-career researchers who have leadership potential and embody de Boisblanc’s spirit of ingenuity.This new named postdoc position joined the Russell L. Heath Distinguished Postdoctoral Appointment established in 2016. The development of distinguished postdoctoral appointments increases the notoriety of INL research programs and highlights specific research capabilities. Understanding the workplace culture and encouraging professional development and growth is essential to guaranteeing a secure future for INL. University Partnerships is a large contributor to the professional development of the current workforce, encouraging employees to further their education in the fields of chemistry, nuclear, mechanical and electrical engineering, computer science, business management, biology and geology. INL’s University Partnerships Division facilitates continuing education within the workforce, providing direct support to cover tuition and fees for classes from accredited institutions.This has proven to be a great benefit, not only to employees, but to their families and community, with an increase in course offerings in the region and expanded educational opportunities. By bringing in distinguished researchers from high-ranking universities, the University Partnerships Joint Appointment Program links INL with the brightest minds in academia and widens the research horizons for the future.The Joint Appointment Program grew by 15 percent in 2017, increasing INL’s presence at academic institutions and establishing new relationships to increase future research.
