INL National University Consortium – Annual Report 18 Adam Zabriskie Ph.D. intern Oregon State University Adam Zabriskie (in red)is very familiar with INL. An Idaho Falls native and an intern since 2015, Zabriskie is working on a doctorate degree in nuclear engineering from Oregon State University. While at INL, Zabriskie has worked on several projects, including implementing fuel-clad chemical interaction failure criteria for metal fuel in Bison. After he finishes his Ph.D., Zabriskie is hoping to continue his career at INL. “Cutting-edge research with great engineers, scientists and technicians? Can’t get any better than that,” Zabriskie said. Katelyn Morales Undergraduate Intern University of New Mexico A university job fair is how Katelyn Morales, an intern from the University of New Mexico, first heard about Idaho National Laboratory. An unknown quantity, Morales was attracted to the opportunity to meet new people in a new town. “I had never spent an extended amount of time in Idaho Falls, and I knew it would force me to engage with new individuals,” Morales said. During her internship, Morales spent the summer working on a video series highlighting researchers and their unique expertise. Now a recent graduate, Morales is now a full-time INL employee. Jackson Harter Ph.D. Intern Oregon State University Originally working in the culinary industry, including teaching at the Western Culinary Institute for two years, Jackson Harter began his undergraduate degree at 25 at Oregon State University (OSU). Now, almost nine years later, Harter finished the third year of his nuclear engineering Ph.D. at OSU and was an intern in the Reactor Physics Design and Analysis group at Idaho National Laboratory. As part of his doctorate research, with the guidance of his Ph.D. professor, Todd Palmer, and INL mentor, Mark DeHart, Harter is adapting Rattlesnake, a neutron transport code, to simulate phonon behavior. Ben Laramee Undergraduate Intern North Carolina State University After hearing about INL at the NCSU Engineering Career Fair and directly from his academic department, Benjamin Laramee joined the 2018 summer contingent of interns in Idaho Falls. During his time at INL, Laramee worked with the Irradiation Testing department and updated the Advanced Test Reactor experiment database, creating individualized webpages for each experiment and creating a detailed history of ATR operations. “My experience at INL was incredible,” Laramee said. “I met an amazing group of both interns and full-time staff, and I was able to experience the incredible wilderness that Idaho has to offer.” After he completes his bachelor’s degree in May, Laramee plans to complete master’s and doctorate degrees in nuclear engineering.
